The 5 Types of Loft Conversion Explained

A loft conversion is one of the best ways to add space and value to your home. But did you know there are several different types of loft conversion?

1. Dormer Loft Conversion

The most popular type in the UK, a dormer extends vertically from the slope of your existing roof, creating additional floor space and headroom.

2. Mansard Loft Conversion

A Mansard conversion changes the angle of your roof slope to be almost vertical, dramatically increasing usable floor space.

3. Hip-to-Gable Conversion

If your property has a hipped roof (sloping on all sides), a hip-to-gable conversion extends the sloping side of the roof to create a vertical gable end.

4. Velux (Rooflight) Conversion

The most straightforward and cost-effective option. Velux windows are installed into the existing roof slope without altering the roof structure.

5. L-Shaped Dormer Conversion

Popular with Victorian terraced houses, an L-shaped dormer creates two dormers at right angles. Contact Space Builders for a free assessment.
